Statins Better Choice than Vytorin, Cardiology Docs Say

Top heart doctors in the United States say although 20 million prescriptions were written for the anti-clotting drug Vytorin last year, those patients should be taking older, more proven drugs.

In January, the results of the ENHANCE report showed Vytorin was no better at reducing clogged arteries than its far less expensive competitor, Zocor. Since then, prescriptions for Vytorin have dropped 18 percent.

This latest recommendation comes from the American College of Cardiology, which says Zocor reduces the risk of death far better than Vytorin, and costs five times less. Statin drugs like Zocor and Lipitor are proven to reduce heart attacks and stroke, but a study looking into Vytorin’s ability to do the same won’t be complete for at least four years, a Bloomberg News report states.

“This study provides no new evidence to support the use of this drug, and it moves us to more uncertainty about the benefits,” said Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist at Yale University, who spoke for the panel. “You’ve just seen a clinical trial that should change practice.”
