Pfizer will blitz media on Chantix pros

Pfizer is set to blitz print media and send letters to doctors in an attempt to squash the bad press its stop smoking drug, Chantix, has received in recent weeks.

The company has released newspaper ads in the country’s five biggest dailies, including New York Times and Wall Street Journal. It allegedly sent letters to 300,000 physicians.

According to Bloomberg News, a report from the Institute of Safe Medication Practices says the Food and Drug Administration has received more reports of adverse reactions from Chantix than any other drug in the fourth quarter 2007.

The FDA reported at the beginning of this year that people on Chantix were attempting suicide more often and a possible linked “couldn’t be ruled out”.

A recent Los Angeles Times investigation tied traffic accidents to Chantix users, especially those people who just started taking the drug.

Pfizer says it is trying to quell all the negative headlines the drug is receiving and is hoping to “make sure the right information is out there. We can’t lose sight of the benefit …,” a Pfizer spokesperson told Bloomberg. “The public health benefit is clear.”
