FDA Panel Considers Pulling Darvon, Darvocet Off Market

Filed January 30th, 2009 meg

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is asking a panel of medical experts to decide whether pain pills Darvon and Darvocet should remain on the market.

Both products were developed by Eli Lilly & Co. Currently, Xanodyne Pharmaceuticals and Qualitest/Vintage Pharmaceuticals market the pills.

The main ingredient in the painkillers, propoxyphene, has been implicated in 5.6% of drug-related deaths from 1981 to 1999.

More than 20 million prescriptions were written for the products containing propoxyphene in 2007.
