Canada warns against using piroxicam for short-term pain

Filed June 26th, 2009 joshua

Health Canada is warning its citizens and health care professionals not to use piroxicam when treating short-term, acute pain.

Piroxicam is in the class of pain-killing drugs known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The Canadian health system said the benefits of using piroxicam in the treatment of short-term pain do not outweigh the side effects or dangers. The prescription-strength NSAID has been linked to dangerous skin reaction and to gastrointestinal trouble.

HealthCanada said piroxicam can still be prescribed in the treatment of longer-term pain care, such as in osteoarthritic patients.
