Accutane pulled from U.S. market

Roche Holding AG has pulled its acne medication, Accutane, from the U.S. market after numerous reports of it being linked to a bowel disease.

According to a Bloomberg News report, Roche informed the Food and Drug Administration that it was pulling Accutane from the market because it feared too much competition from generics.

More than 5,000 claims against Roche have been made in relation to Accutane. People taking the drug claim they weren’t properly warned of the dangers of it causing inflammatory bowel disease.

One attorney interviewed by Bloomberg said he’s won $10.5 million from Roche in cases he’s presented against Accutane and believes there will be more cases in the face of this recent development.

At least 13 million people have taken Accutane since it was introduced to the U.S. market in 1982.
