FDA says Johnson & Johnson misleading consumers about athlete’s foot cream

Filed August 28th, 2009 joshua

The Food and Drug Administration is accusing drug maker Johnson & Johnson of misleading consumers about the risks of using its athlete’s foot cream, Ertaczo (sertaconazole nitrate).

Regulators are concerned with advertisements appearing in medical journals. According to a report from Associated Press, J&J’s campaign implies Ertaczo can be used for indications not approved by the FDA, makes unsubstantiated claims about the product’s effectiveness and avoids mentioning some risk information.

The FDA said J&J’s ads mention some adverse effects of using Ertaczo but not the contraindications of using it. This can mislead consumers into thinking the cream is safer than proven.

J&J needs to respond to an FDA letter about the ads and has been ordered to stop running it in journals.
