A new study shows that more than a half-million children suffer adverse reactions or side effects after taking common drugs.

These complications often require hospitalization or some other follow-up treatment.

More often, children under the age of 5 suffer these adverse reactions, which most commonly include rashes, stomach aches and diarrhea.

The study, conducted in part by the Children’s Hospital in Boston, concludes that many children suffer allergic reactions after their first exposure to a drug.

Statistics for the study were derived from analyzing emergency room data from 1995 until 2005. No deaths resulted from the reactions to the drugs.

All the drugs analyzed were prescribed. Most often, the drugs were prescribed for ear infections, strep throat, depression and cancer in younger children. Teens most often suffered complications from taking those drugs as well as birth control pills.
